Southern Albemarle World Expo
This Saturday, October 8, our school division is joining the Scottsville Volunteer Rescue Squad and Albemarle County Fire and Rescue to honor the life-saving services of the highly dedicated and courageous volunteers who serve our communities around the clock. Many fire and rescue departments are conducting open houses, and one of the most memorable events will be held at the Scottsville Rescue Squad headquarters at 805 Irish Road in Scottsville.
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. this Saturday, families will be able to choose among a wide variety of activities, including a tour of the rescue squad headquarters and information from such groups as the Women’s Initiative, Red Cross, Counseling Alliance, Free Clinic, and PVCC. For children, there will be a petting zoo, a bounce house, face painting, rocket launchers, the state’s Mobile Computer Bus, and exhibits from the Children’s Museum.
This is a wonderful way not only to celebrate the vital work of our rescue squad volunteers, but also to take advantage of what should be a beautiful fall day of family fun activities.
Make-Up Pictures
Make-up pictures will be Monday, November 10. Any student wishing to do a retake must bring their original pictures to exchange. Picture forms are in the main office and have been available for two weeks.

Bond Referendum
This November 8, the ballot in Albemarle County will include not just candidates for President of the United States and for Congress, but also a question on whether the county should issue $35 million in general obligation bonds to finance improvements at 25 of 26 school facilities. Schools in all three of the county’s feeder patterns are involved.

To help ensure that voters are well-informed on the referendum before they cast their ballots, local government and the school division will be conducting a community information program.

The program will not advocate for or against the referendum, but will provide factual information about the projects and their impact on schools and taxpayers.

There are two more community forums hosted by the League of Women Voters in October:
  • Tuesday, October 11 | Monticello High School | 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 26 | Albemarle High School | 6 p.m.

PTO Meeting
Our next PTO Meeting will be October 13, 2016 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the WMS Library. Mr. Walton will be sharing information about Positive Behavioral Interventions and the Strategic Improvement plan with the PTO and other interested parents. This will be in addition to the regular PTO meeting. If you would like to be part of PTO or just attend a meeting we encourage you to come out.

AVID College Tours in March
AVID students received permission slips for the College Tours field trip in March.  The first deposit of $60 for the trip is due by Friday, October 21.  Contact Mr. McElroy or Mrs. Capps with any questions.

Tabletop Games Guest Speaker
We'll have a guest speaker who is an expert in tabletop games visiting Walton on Wednesday, October 12th from 4-5:30 pm to teach students how to play Magic the Gathering.  If your child would like to stay after, please let Mrs. Capps know so we have enough cards for everyone.  If interest is high, we'll create a Magic the Gathering club that meets regularly at Walton.  Contact Mrs. Capps at ncapps@k12albemarle.org or 977-5615 x54133 if you have any questions or to RSVP for a deck.

Frontier Culture Museum
Frontier Culture Museum field trip forms are due by Wednesday, October 12.  Please get your form in soon.

Tuskegee Airman Field Trip
Mr. Hansell's seventh grade history students received permission slips to see a play at the Paramount about the Tuskegee airmen on October 27.  This Off-Broadway show is a rare treat and fits perfectly with the 7th grade history curriculum.  Mr. McElroy's 7th & 8th grade Drama students have also been invited.  Spaces are limited, so bring those forms in soon!

When to Keep a Child Home from School Due to Illness
As cold and flu season approaches we thought it would be a good idea to remind parents of when it is appropriate and best to keep students home due to illness.

Please do not send your child to school if:

  • Your child has had a fever of 100.2 degrees Fahrenheit or higher within the past 24 hours. Children should be free of fever for a continuous 24 hours before returning to school without the use of medications such as ibuprofen (e.g. Motrin, Advil) or acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol). Temperatures often spike in the late afternoon/evening hours.
  • You know or suspect that you child has a fever or is ill. Please delay sending him or her to school until you have had enough time to observe behavior and feel certain she or he is well enough to be in school.
  • Your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness and has not yet received medication for a minimum of 24 hours, or until your doctor tells you your child is no longer contagious.
  • Your child has received medication for an illness for the required 24 hours, but still has a fever.
  • Your child has vomited the night before or in the morning before going to school.
  • Your child has diarrhea, stomach pain or cramping.
  • Your child has nasal drainage requiring constant wiping and blowing.
  • Your child has frequent coughing throughout the day or night.
  • Your child has any combination of the above symptoms.

Children who come to school sick are not productive learners and are often miserable all day.
More importantly, they can spread the illness to classmates and teachers.

Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to slow or stop the spread of germs in your family. Please review the proper procedure with your children at home.

Please feel free to call the nurse, Daniela Marden, if you have any questions.

Finally, please remember to call the school to report your child’s absence each day he or she is out.
