WMS Friday Family Message 10-1-16

I apologize for the tardiness in getting this to you. Due to some travel hiccups it is coming out one day later than usual.

We hope you enjoyed your time with students this past Monday. We had a productive day of professional development at WMS, which included some work around using assessments like the MAP tests to better inform instruction, effective vocabulary instruction, and strategies for helping adolescent students deal with stressful and even traumatic situations. Professional development is vital to helping us as educators serve your students to the best of our ability, so we appreciate the times that we get to do this.

We have lots of announcements this week:

Opportunities and Field Trips:
  • Dungeons & Dragons will hold its first meeting after school on Thursday, October 6th in room 33.  If your child is interested in adventurous role-playing games or likes the idea of interactive story-telling, then this is a great club to try out!  Contact Natalie M. Capps at ncapps@k12albemarle.org for more details.
  • Interested students will be pulled for Wrap-Up on Monday, October 10th to attend an informational meeting about the Reflections Art contest.  It's not too late to sign-up, so contact Polly Breckenridge (pbreckenridge@k12albemarle.org) or Natalie M. Capps (ncapps@k12albemarle.org) for more information.
  • Sixth graders will visit the Frontier Culture Museum on Monday, October 17th.  Thanks to the museum's generosity, this is a FREE trip!  Students need to return permission forms by Wednesday, Oct. 12 so we have an accurate head-count.  Contact Rod Vaughn (rvaughn@k12albemarle.org) or Natalie M. Capps (ncapps@k12albemarle.org) for more details.
  • AVID students visit colleges throughout the school year.  We're planning a four-day, overnight trip to visit colleges in the Tidewater area on March 7-10, 2017.  Permission slips went home this week, and the payment timeline begins in October.  Contact Tommy McElroy (tmcelroy@k12albemarle.org) or Natalie M. Capps (ncapps@k12albemarle.org) for more information.
Vendor Fair November 5 to Benefit Families in Crisis:
A vendor fair will be held November 5th from 10:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Walton Middles School. This event will assist the FAMILIES IN CRISIS (Holidays with Hearts) program we have here at Walton.  The program assist families with such a wide area of services beyond services here at the school, helps purchase all the school supplies for Back to School and beyond that we so desperately need throughout the school year. If you are interesting in reserving space as a vendor please visit the Announcements page of the WMS site for the application. Please save the date for this great event to come support our students and some local vendors.
